Taxi by Night – Version 0.2.0 is here!

Hello!

Version 0.2.0 is finally available! There are 3 new stories to play and a bunch of improvements. My friend and collaborator Nathan Gould has done an excellent job editing all stories. No only the overall quality of the text has increased immensely, but new dialog has been added as well.

Smell

As for some visual changes, the lighting has been fixed in order for the game not be so dark in some areas. You can see a comparison below.

Also, Siebel3d has made an all new model for the Point665 Bar. You can see a comparison on this recent post.

The game also has an autosave system now (manual saving coming in the future). And there’s a menu where you can see all stories and mark them as played, in order to make it easier to replay them.

You can find a full changelog inside the menu as well for a complete list! As for the next version, I’m planing to add 4 new stories, and a whole new area (neighborhood), the French Quarter.

This update will be a big one, and as I mentioned before, I will increase the price of the game whenever I make one of these. So get it now if you want to get a discount!

Early Access coming soon!

Hello!

I wanted to make a devlog post highlighting some of the changes before we launch the early access version, which should happen in one or two weeks, if nothing goes wrong.

Most stories in the game take place in certain neighborhoods of New Wenders. There will be two of them available for the Early Access launch: Downtown and East-side (the first one being the one that was on the game jam version).

But some stories will unfold – in part or entirely – in smaller areas, like a diner. One specific diner, called Tangerine:

And speaking of coffee, you might also run into some not-so-pleasant encounters.

The new neighborhood, East-side, is very different from Downtown. It’s darker, the buildings are not so nice and there are no trees or small parks around.

As for the stories, the early access version will feature four of them (so about 10% of the total planned for the full game, most of which is already written as of now), with different characters, in three different locations.

I will have an FAQ done before launch detailing more of what’s going to change with every update, but basically the idea is to add new stories and fix/improvements based on feedback. The price of the game will also go up as we make meaningful updates, so that’s also a big incentive to get it early =)

If you want to get in touch in the meantime, you can come to our Discord Server or send a message on twitter @robsonsiebel

Cheers,

Robson

January Devlog – Saving System and Flashbacks!

Hello all!

January has been quite productive around here, I started the month by implementing my saving system, which would also come in handy because now that I have all the chapters in the game I wanted to do some testing with an entire playthrough.

saveui

This is not the final  UI, but is probably close to the final version. There will be 3 different slots for now, but given the amount of different paths I’m considering adding more, as well as a way to edit the name of the saved  data.

Another big thing I’ve been working on is the Flashbacks. If you played the Blackout demo you probably encountered a flashback, they are basically a scene where the character recollects a piece of memory connected to what caused him to blackout.

In the demo this flashbacks were basically represented by a scrollable text on a different background, but I wanted to do something more special because they are core to the story. So what I ended up coming up with is something that makes it look more like a comic book, and also more interactable.

Here’s a piece of one flashback, but please keep in mind that the assets are all placeholders and things are not properly animated yet.

flashbackfade

The dialog moves along as the player clicks, and there are also sound effects and ambiance, which really makes a ton of difference in some of the scenes.

Let me know what you think, and if you have any suggestions!

Ciao!

December (quick) Update!

Hello!

it has been a while since the last post, mostly because I’ve been busy with Blackout’s development, had to spend a lot of time with marketing stuff, like creating this landing page, which implied in me having to update and translate the whole site, (something I was meaning to do for almost 2 years now).

Anyway, development has been moving well, as of now I have 9 out of the 10 chapters playable, which means soon I’ll be able to have a test build in which a whole playthrough will be possible. But after I finish this there is still A LOT to be done, need to start testing the systems, balance attribute changes, make sure every path/choice is reachable, add remaining SFX and then finally polish and confetti.

I just wanted to share the chapter workflow, since I mentioned previously that the choices can change the order of the chapters (reference names have been omitted).

See you in 2019 =)

2018 Video Game Idea Generator

This is just something that I did because I thought it was a funny idea, given the quantity of PUBG clones I expect to see along 2018.

Basically it’s a base phrase structure like: “100 _____ are dropped in _____ where they have to ______ until ______” and some pools where I get random words to fill in. I mostly chose things that I thought would make for a funny line, sometimes it works very well!

There’s a web version on itch.io if you want to check it out. If you have any suggestions for funny words or sentences let me know =)
